![]() ![]() Change for change sake is silly, unless it makes it better. The airport network in my he’s consistently delivers almost full up and down speeds (520/520), and it works all over my house with 20 devices connected at any given time at full link speed… I achevé yet to find about her wireless product that performs as reliably or as well, sometimes you don’t update something because you don’t have to. The amplifi HD came the closest in performance, being able to broadcast 490/490 at full link speed, but again the coverage wasn’t the same and it also needed rebooted more than it should. The eero doesn’t have th es se management capabilities and isn’t as fast, my broadband connection is 550down/550up, and the eero could only broadcast about 280mbps even when devices were connected at full link speed, also the coverage wasn’t very good. The orbi had to be rebooted at minimum once a week once it’s cache got full, which is the same problem all netgear routers have, also can only connect at 866mbps, even though my MacBook Pro has a 1.33gbps chip in it, the airport DOES deliver that link speed, the orbi is also 399. Then the express will get AC.Īs far as using the other products, I have used the eero, the orbi, and the amplifi HD. My guess is that the next AirPort Extreme will have 802.11 AX which has entered the draft stage. ![]() It was way ahead when it was released 4 years ago, and other companies are now somewhat catching up but the reliability still isn’t there, so there’s no need for Apple to release a new one especially since the “wave 2” AC devices don’t perform much better. Unlike the display which they officially said they’d be discontinuing, no such language has come for the airport line. Just because something hasn’t been updated doesn’t mean it’s bad, or being “dropped”. It never needs restarted unless there’s a firmware update, runs 24/7 without maintaince, and provides maximum throughout for every device connected, they cover the whole house, and you can use them as a “mesh” network very easily. They haven’t updated them in a while, and I’d like an airport express refresh, but the AirPort Extreme from 2013 still performs better than all of its competitors in the space. They’re still making them, and you can still buy them new. Super happy, although several hundred buck lighter. There no evidence that Apple has “dropped” the airport lineup. Eventually, I'll get a NAS connected in order to have multiple back-up drives for redundancy. the TimeCapsule+Extreme (over wifi) because of "mesh".Īlso, I've been able to keep my TimeCapsule connected (wifi off) for Mac backups. Speeds are so much faster with the new router. Parental controls doesn't use Disney Circle (see ya later Netgear). Usable USB ports for printers and hard/thumb drives.ģ. Officially compatible with Time Machine via a connected hard drive.Ģ. I went with the Synology router + mesh repeater because of the following.ġ. In the end, we decided we needed Feature #1 above. I resisted for a long long time, mainly because the TC network worked and I didn't want to rock the boat. The ability to manage the router from outside of the network, like when I'm at work. The ability to "easily" set up a schedule for individual devices/users to allow/disable wifi.ģ. The ability to turn off wifi to a single device or specific users (i.e. I didn't want to do it, but had to because of a few features that Apple doesn't have.ġ. I've recently retired my TC/Extreme network in favor of a new Synology network.
